Thornton le Dale 1st Eleven V's Fylindales @ Fylindales, Saturday 2nd May 2009

Fylindales won by 2 wickets with 4 balls to spare.

Dale batted first and started woefully at 7 for 2 with both openers gone. Lyle King added a further 10 before Tom Sigsworth (56)

and Stuart Hill (39) put on 74 for the 4th Wicket.

Wickets continued to fall but Tim Hodgson (20) and Chris Headlam (20) including a crashing 6 back over the bowlers head kept

the scoreboard ticking, and the Innings finished on 166 for 9.

M. Thistle 4 for 38, M. Estill 3 for 40 and R. Hodgson 2 for 37 were the pick of the bowlers for Fylindales.

Fylindales Innings started quickly but wickets fell at regular intervals throughout the Innings.

Opener P. Hinchcliffe added a fine 32 and was well supported by M. Thistle (24).

Fylindales looked good for victory but fine bowling by Tim Hodgson 2 for 38 off 17 overs and Pete Lockwood 8 overs 5 for 25 got

Dale back into the match.

Entering the last few overs the run rate was up to 6 runs per over, however a big 6 from B. Lleyes (29 no.) with 5 overs to go got the

Home team back on track. 14 were needed off the last 2 overs.

R.Hodgson (17 no.) hit a 6 off the penultimate over to leave 4 needed from the last over with Hodgson hitting the winning runs.

C. Headlam finished his bowling with 9 overs 1 for 49.

Thornton le Dale 2nd Eleven V's Wombleton @ Home, Saturday 2nd May 2009

Thornton Dale bowled tidily and held six catches in dismissing Wombleton for 123 in 35 overs. Newcomer Paul Ransome took 5 wickets for 48.

The home teams batting then showed early season frailty against some useful seam bowling and could only score 81 in 34 overs.

John Knowles scored 26 and David Cowton 18 but no one else reached double figures.

Thornton le Dale 3rd Eleven V's Sewerby 3rd's@ Home, Saturday 2nd May 2009

Sewerby won by 20 runs

The first match of the season under new Captain Matthew Clark got off to a good start.

Clark won the toss and put Sewerby into bat. Opening bowler Hodgson soon had the opener caught and wickets tumbled quickly.

Dale had Sewerby at 14 for 3 at one point, however a good middle order batting pushed the score quickly and all the batsmen scored

good runs. After their alloted overs Sewerby finshed with a very credible 161 for 8. Pick of the Bowlers were Ashley Hodgson with 5 for 46

For the Thornton innings Joe Bayes opened and batted superb for his 50. He was well supported by Sam Davies (28) and a Captains

Innings by Matthew Clark (24).

Thornton were 20 runs short at the end but for the young team there were some encouraging performances.

Thornton le Dale V's Lockton@ Home,Thursday 7th May 2009

Lockton 83 for 9, Thornton 84 for 5

Lockton won the Toss and elected to bat but were soon on the back foot as Tim Hodgson 4overs 1 for 10 and

Dan Hill 4 overs 3 for 31 took regular wickets. However Andy Hill survived this on-slaught to reach 34. Little other support was offered

as Paul Ransome bowwled tightly to take figures of 3 overs 4 for 13.

Ash Hodgson offered great support with 1 fo 25 off his 3 overs. Dales fielders were in stupendous form for taking all 5 catches that were offered,

3 being in the deep.

Dales response started slow with Jim Boyes 4 overs 0 for 13 and Gareth Hunt 3 for 12 halting the chase.

However Tim Hodgson proved to be the thorn in Lockton's side as he went onto smash 41 not out of only 25 balls.

Support from Lyle King who made 10 but ran really hard when things got tight.

Dale required 48 off the last 4 overs, but with Hodgson at the crease this always looked possible.

Luke Kenworthy was the unlucky bowler as he picked up 2 wickets but at a cost of 33 off his 3 overs.Dale knocked off the runs with only 1 ball to spare.

Thornton le Dale 1st Eleven V's Grindale, Home Saturday 9th May

Thornton le Dale 143 for 2 beat Grindale 141 for 5 by 8 wickets

Grindale batted first and Thornton opened with a spinner which proved to be a masterstroke as Grindale were soon 3 down with not many runs on the board.

Tim Hodgson also doing damage with figures of 2 for 39 off 12 overs. Hodgson also proved good with his fielding as he grabbed 2 cheeky run outs.

However opener R. Jackson hit 60 before Hodgson ran him out. He was well supported by B.Jackson who ended unbeaten on 45.

Dale started their reply by losing a quick wicket, however Pat Stephenson (60) and Stuart Hill (44 no) put on 107 for the second wicket.

Stuart would have reached his 50 but his son Danny thwarted his attempts by hitting a quick 15 no. to finish the game quickly.

The pick of the Grindale bowlers was A.Smith who bowled tightly for figures of 1 for 20 off 12 overs. Dale reached their target in 33 overs

after the game had been reduced to 41 overs per team after earlier rain.

Thornton le Dale 2nd Eleven V's Sherburn 2nd Eleven, away Saturday 9th May

The Second Elevn lost their second game against a strong Sherburn side by 72 runs.

The Thornton bowlers coped well in the cold and windy conditions, but Sherburn still managed to score 190 for 8,

Iain Farrow and Paul Waring each taking three wickets.

In reply Thornton got off to a very poor start and at one stage were 20 for 6.

Sensible batting by Iain Farrow (35), Oliver Sigsworth (13) and Tom Croot (14) aided by a plentiful supply of extras earned a single batting point

before the Captain misjudged John Farrow's fleetness of foot and the final wicket fell at 118.

Thornton le Dale 3rd Eleven V's Brompton 2nd's away, Saturday 9th May 2009

Thornton 114 for 9, Brompton 118 for 4

Thornton were put into bat on a very cold and windy day. The Dale opening pair were dismissed cheaply and wickets tumbled.

Sam Stephenson played the most mature Innings of his cricketing career taking his time to score a wonderful 52. He was well

supported by Matthew Clarke and all the lower end batsmen. After their 40 overs the very young Dale team scored an

impressive 114.

After a heavy rain shower Brompton started their Innings slowly and some tight bowling by both Hodgson and Davies

had Brompton reeeling on 14 for 4. However things slipped as the middle order Brompton Batsmen suddenly stepped up a gear

and knocked the runs off easily.

Thornton le Dale V's Slingsby@ Slingsby, Monday 11th May 2009

Thornton 87 all out beat Slingsby 72 for 9

Slingsby bowled first and looked good when Dale were 0 for 2 after only 5 balls. Dale were then reduced to 13 for 4.

Dan Hill (17) and Paul Elgy (5) steadied the ship. M. Todd (22) and Ash Hodgson (17) added 37 for the 9th Wicket.

S.Davies 4 overs 3 for 19 and S. Marshall 4 overs 2 for 18 bowled well at the start for Slingsby and J.Wilford 3 overs 3 for 24 with J Hatfield

3 overs 2 for 25 proved a good change of bowling.

Slingsby started their innings off well with J.Wilford hitting a quick 14, however Keano 4 overs 3 for 20 and Tim Hodgson 4 overs 3 for 15

cut Slingsby back. Only W.Fawcett (13) offered any resistance but was taken smartly with a caught and bowled in a spell of 3 overs 2 for 11 by Dan Hill.

Sam Harrison stuck to his job ending 15 no, but wasn't enough as Ash Hodgson bowled the last over fo only 4 runs.

Thornton le Dale 3rd Eleven V's Wold Newton 2nd's Home, Tuesday 12th May 2009

Wold newton won the toss and decided to bat
Both M. Williams and A.hodgson both bowled very well, each taking a wicket with their first ball
J. Read and M. Todd both bowled well in the middle and Ash and Mark finshed off well at the end leaving Wold Newton 60-5 off their 18 overs
Batting didnt start well for Thornton with both openers back in the pavillion with just 7 on the board
this was due to wold newtons opening spinner who bowled 5 overs 3 maidens 6 runs and 2 wickets
however M.Todd and E.Famberly steadied the innings and got the team going in the right direction
M.Todd was then out soon followed by another
H.stenton hit a lovely 4 down the ground to ease the pressure but he was out soon after
this left M.Williams and E.Famberly needing 5 off the last over
Mark got a single and then Eddy hit a 6 to win the game
this is the first time the 3rd XI has progressed to the next round of the cup in their history

Thornton le Dale V's Ryedale@ Ryedale, Thursday 14th May 2009

Thornton 131 for 6 beat Ryedale 113 all out by 18 runs

Thornton batted first and Tom Sigsworth (51) started off like a bullet with the first 3 balls all going for 4.

When Sigsworth departed for the first wicket, Dale had reached 71. Stuart Hill was the other opener and departed for 20 soon after.

Alex Ibbotson was introduced to the Ryedale attack and bowled with great accuracy to end up with figures of 4 overs 4 for 33.

Lewis White (15) offered some resistance but once again Tim Hodgson came good with a quick fire 28 not out.

In response Ryedale got off to a nice start with Sam Burns (19) and Ryan Boyes (16) starting things off. Mick Temple continued

this with a neat 21. However Ryedale were always chasing runs with Tim Hodgson and Chris Headlam both taking 2 wickets.

Alex Ibbotson continued his fine game by hitting 18 which included 2 huge sixes off the bowling of Danny Hill. Hill, however had the last

laugh as he clean bowled Ibbotson next ball and ended up with figures of 3 overs 5 for 24.

One special note must go to the fielding as once again this season Dale showed much improvement taking 5 catches.

Thornton Dale 2nds v Seamer 3rds - Home Saturday 16 May 09

From a shaky position of 49 for 5 after the first 20 overs, Thornton Dale recovered strongly and finished with a total of 153 for 7.

Matthew Todd (22) was the only early batsman to show form but Simon Wrench (45)  Oliver Sigsworth (15) and Sam Asquith (29 n o ) all prospered later.

Seamer started their innings aggressively but after the fall of 3 wickets their reply fell away rapidly against a varied attack and they were all out in the

30th over for 88, giving the home team their first league win of 2009 and 18 valuable points. Matthew Todd took 3 wickets for 39 but pride of place

went to Paul Waring who took a remarkable 4 wickets for 1 run in 6 overs.

Thornton Dale 3rds v Great Habton -  Home Saturday 16 May 09

Not the best of days for the 3rd XI, Great Habton batted first and made 215-4 from their 40 overs

John Lumley opened the batting and batted through to make 104 not out

When Thornton got their chance to bat it didnt start well with each of the top 3 batsmen making 0

There was some resistance in the middle order from S.Stephenson, S.Davies and M.Clark who made 16, 14 and 19 respectively

But on a day when there were many catches dropped and 6 batsmen making 0 the 3rd team never really stood a chance

Thornton Dale 2nd X1 v  Fylingdales 2nd X1 Home Saturday 23rd May 2009.

Heavy rain during the week followed by drying conditions produced a pitch on which few batsmen shone.

Batting first Fylingdales were all out in the 40th over for 87.  Matthew Todd again took 3 wickets (for 27)

and all the other bowlers got into the score book apart from Paul Waring - last week's star.

His removal from the attack enabled a new duo of Toddy and Boddy to remove the last 3 batsmen.

Once again the Thornton innings got off to a poor start 4 wickets falling for only 21 runs.

Simon Wrench and Iain Farrow then batted very sensibly putting on 51 which almost won the game before Iain was out for 29.

Simon then hit the winning runs to finish with 35 not out leaving the home side victorious by 5 wickets and gaining a further 18 points.

Thornton Dale 3rds v Whitby 3rd's -  Away Saturday 23 May 09

This is the first game that the new 3rd team captain won the toss and decided to bat first

Batting got off to a decent start with A.Hodgson make an aggressive 14, all hit in the direction of cow corner

However once Ash was out wickets started to tumble and thornton found themselves 5 down for not too many runs

Normally that would be it for the team and they would have their minds on getting back to The Buck but M.Williams (25) and J.Riley (33) had different ideas

The 2 young batsman played very well against some accurate Whitby bowling and when the pair were finally out Thornton found themselves in a decent position

This brought father and son, J.Read and N.Read to the crease and the pair batted very well together

N.Read made an impressive 18 and J.Read finished 8 not out to push the thornton innings to 131 all out from 37 overs

Thornton then bowled very impressively with P.Allerdice and S.Davies opening the bowling and giving the Whitby batsmen nothing to get after

S.Davies will have J.Riley to thank after the latter pulled off 2 unbelievable catches to give Sam 2 of his 3 wickets.

Only one Whitby batsman made it into double figures and the young batsman made a very good 33 out of a team total of 72

Bowling figures:

S.Davies 7 overs 3 maidens 5 runs 3 wickets

P.Allerdice 8 overs 1 maiden 14 runs 3 wickets

A.Hodgson 7.1 overs 0 maidens 28 runs 3 wickets

M.williams 5 overs 0 maidens 20 runs 1 wicket

This was a vast improvement from last week in the field by Thornton taking 5 catches, all very well held, lets hope that the team can move onwards and upwards from here

Thornton Dale 3rds v Cayton 3rd's -  Home Saturday 30th May 09

On a warm day and a dry wicket Cayton won the toss and decided to bat first

The first ball of the innings was a no ball full toss that hit the batsman from S.Davies, his excuse being his hands were still slippy from putting his sun cream on

S.Davies then got the first wicket with a peach of a delivery which even batsmen at a higher level would have struggled to keep out

Sam then took another wicket and he was well supported by S.Asquith who bowled well without luck in his first spell

A.Hodgson and P.Allardice then came on to bowl and Ash took 2 wickets but it was Paul who stole the show taking 5-14 from 7 overs

S.Asquith came back on to take 1 wicket but it was P.Allardice that was the star

This left Cayton all out for just 78

G.Bayes (20) and M.Todd (15) got Thornton off to a good solid start putting on 35 for the first wicket

But then Thornton lost 4 wickets for just 10 runs and were looking shakey at 45-4

However Captain M.Clark (11 not out) and S.Davies (20 not out) batted well to finish off the game with S.Davies finishing it off in style by hitting his first 6 for Thornton

Another good win for the ever improving 3rd team.

Thornton Dale 2nd X1 v Lockton 2nds - Saturday 6 June 09

Thornton had to satisfy themselves with six league points after losing by 2 wickets in a game of four quarters.

Batting first the home team reached 102 for 4.  John Knowles scored 21 and Simon Wrench and Paul Waring each made 18.

Five wickets then fell for 10 runs and the innings eventually closed for a disappointing 129 when Paul Ransome was caught off the last ball for a very well played 46.

In reply the Thornton bowlers struck early;

Lockton were 6 for 2 and 66 for 6 due mainly to excellent bowling by Matthew Todd and Tom Croot (2 for 12 in his 5 overs).

Sadly this was followed by too many loose deliveries and a total of 25 extras which enabled the opposition to reach the 120s

before Matthew Todd took 2 more wickets to finish with figures of 4 for 38 off 13 overs. The winning boundary came off the first ball of the 33rd over.

Thornton Dale 3rd X1 v Ganton 2nds - Saturday 6 June 09

Thornton batted first against top of the league and only managed 58 all out

only L.Miers (12) and S.Williams (10) made it into double figures

The bowlers never stood a chance and Ganton won by 10 wickets in just 7 overs

Thornton Dale 2nd X1 v Ravenscar 2nd X1- Saturday 13 June 09

Thornton had an easy win by 10 wickets and gained the maximum 20 points.

Ravenscar batted first, lost a wicket to the first ball of the match and never really recovered.  Tom Croot and Robin Boddy each took 3 wickets and the last 2 fel to Sam Asquith as Ravenscar were all out for 60. His final victim was the Ravenscar Captain's wife, out first ball.  Her husband then banished her to deep fine leg at both ends when Thornton batted.

A new opening pair of Paul Elgey and Tom Croot batted robustly and ran well between wickets to knock off the runs in the 8th over.  Paul scoring 31 not out and Tom 23 not out.
                          ----------------------------------

On Sunday the 2nds lost their Welford Cup game  against Seamer 3rds by 20 runs.

Matthew Todd was Captain for the day and achieved the considerable feat of using 7 bowlers in 20 overs. Unfortunately no one bowled particularly well and on a very good batting wicket with a fast outfield Seamer finished with 150 for 2.

In reply the two Matthews both made their mark (Todd 26 and Clark 21).  The next 4 batsmen all flourished briefly but no one stayed in long enough to make a serious challenge to the Seamer score.  The game finished with Thornton scoring 130 for 5.

Thornton Dale 3rd X1 v Hunmanby 2nd X1- Saturday 13 June 09

From top of the league to bottom of the league and the contrast in results shows

after losing by 10 wickets last week the 3rds managed to turn in round and win by 10 wickets this week

Thornton fielded first and bowled very impressively

P.Allerdice took 2-20 opening the bowling, Skipper A.Hodgson took 2-17, Youngster H.Stenton took 1-12

But it was S.Davies who took 5-20 who was the most impressive

A special mention goes to Naif who took a excellent catch in the field

Hunmanby only managed to get 73 all out with just one batsman making it into double figures

A.Hodgson (15 not out) and E.Fambely (34 not out) opened the batting and found it relitively easy getting knocking off the runs in just 17 overs

Thornton Dale 2nd X1 v Scalby 3rd X1- Saturday 20 June 09

Having comfortably dealt with Ravenscar 2nds 10 men and a lady last week, the second  X1s struggled in the rain to defeat 8 gentlemen of Scalby on Saturday.

Thornton scored 165, thanks mainly to an innings of 61 by John Farrow (the second X1's first half century of the season). Andrew Rudd scorded 19 and Paul Waring and Oliver Sigsworth both got into double figures but it needed 25 extras to help the total to a level of respectability.

In reply Scalby hit out strongly and had scored 72 in less than 12 overs before the second wicket fell.  Colin Lockwood in his first game of the season kept going for 13 overs and was rewarded with 5 for 26 whilst 94 runs were scored at the other end.  The Captain took advantage of Toddy's absence at Silverstone to take 2 for 10 and the seventh and final wickets fell in the twenty eighth over with the score at 121.

As a result Thornton were rewarded somewhat generously with a further 18 league points.

Thornton Dale 3rd X1 v Wyekham 3rd X1- Saturday 20 June 09

On a rainy day at Scalby's ground M.Clark won the toss and decided to bowl first

A.Hodgson and P.Allerdice opened the bowling and both bowled well with out luck

Both Wykeham openers batted well but had their fair share of luck along the way

The break through was made by Captain M.Clark with the score on 86, it was a edge to slip which was very well taken by E.Fambely (who also dropped a dolly of the same bowler just a few balls later)

A.Hodgson, P.Allerdice and O.Baxter each took 2 wickets and Wykeham had made a very good 188-7 from their 40 overs

After such a big total score Thornton needed a strong start which is rare to come by in the 3rd team but they got exactly what they needed

M.Clark batted very aggressively and made 24 runs from just 17 balls before falling LBW with the score at 37 off 5 overs

E.Fambeley (30) and S.Stephenson (21) carried on the good start and the 3rd team we're flying along and when S.Stephenson was out the score was 75 off just 12 overs

J.Riley made a good 20 before being ran out

This had A.Hodgson (35 not out) and R.Stephenson (5) at the crease and they put on a very timely 49 for the 5th wicket

A.Hodgson knocked off the runs himself with a lovely 4 to finish but was helped along by the 57 extra's Wykeham conceeded

This is the 3rd team's highest ever team score of 192-7 and the biggest run chace they've succeed in

This is also the 4th win of the season in the league, the most the 3rds have now

Thornton Dale 3rd X1 v Wold Newton 2nd X1- Saturday 04 July 09

Thornton won the toss and put Wold Newton in to bat first

This appeared to be a good decition when Wold Newton found themselves 4-2 after P.Allerdice took 2 wickets in 2 balls in the 4th over

M.Williams came on and bowled excellently in his first spell going for just 5 runs from his 5 overs

However Wold Newton's opener S.Addison and captain G.Taylor (33) steadied the ship and batted very well to push the score up

O.Baxter came on and removed S.Addison for 70 with a well taken catch by M.Clark

A.Hodgson then changed ends to the one he started at and took 3 wickets for 6 runs in his first 3 overs from that end, one of which was a very good catch in the deep by M.Williams

He then took one more to finish with 4-33 from 11 overs and M.Williams came on for 4 overs at the end, he took a well deserved wicket to finish with 1-17 from 9 overs

There was some lazy fielding which Thornton will need to improve on to win games but R.Stephenson did field very well

Wold Newton finished with 175-8 from their 40 overs

Batting everyone made starts but in the end Thornton fell just short

A new opening pair of G.Bayes (13) and M.Clark (17) both got off to solid starts but failed to carry on

S.Stephenson played well for his 23, L.Miers batted well to make his highest score of the season, 21

A.Hodgson (18) and M.Willaims put on 54 for the 6th wicket with Mark making an very good and aggressive 35

R.Stephenson (11) and R.Rodger (13 not out) played very well

But with 11 needed off the last over it was just too much, 5 runs were scored and Thornton lost by 5 runs

a very good game with some good performances by the team but fielding needs to be improved on

Thornton Dale 2nd X1 v Ravenscar 2nd X1- Saturday 4th July 09

Following their defeat three weeks ago Ravenscar turned up at Thornton clearly determined to put up strong resistance. Their Captain had been replaced, his wife dropped and twelve players selected, although only two were allowed to bowl.  Thornton batted first and a new opening pair of Oliver Sigsworth (35) and Sam Asquith (15) put on 46 for the first wicket. Numbers 3 to 7 all got into double figures but the going was sedate until Paul Waring weighted in with a rumbustious 27 which helped the score along to a respectable 162 for 7.

Ravenscar started slowly but gained in confidence as Thornton spilled an unusual number of catches. Three quick wickets from Paul Waring put Thornton back on track until a late flurry left Ravenscar needing 14 to win off his last over. Despite two deliveries following a trajectory akin to two earlier sixes off his bat. Paul conceded only nine runs as Ravenscar finished with 158 for 6, leaving Thornton victorious by 4 runs and gaining 16 points.

Thornton Dale 2nd X1 v Lockton 2nd X1- Saturday 11th July 09

Last week the seconds beat Ravenscar by 4 runs, this week they lost to Lockton by the same amount.

When Lockton had scored 102 for 8 with 9 overs remaining Thornton were well on top. Not for the first time, however, the bowlers were unable to finish things off and sensible batting by the Lockton tail gave them a useful total of 142 without further loss. Tom Croot bowled well to take 3 for 30 in 10 overs and was well supported by Robin Boddy and Paul Waring.

In reply Thornton's early batsmen struggled against steady bowling and 6 wickets had fallen for only 55 when junior veteran John Farrow joined senior veteran Dave Cowton at the crease.  This pair then showed what could be done by a mixture of sound defence, sensible 'running' between the wickets and puttinng away the bad balls.  They added 64 before John was out for 26.  Dave Cowton scored 38 (129 for 9) and although Robin Boddy scored a quick 12 the last wicket fell off the fourth ball of the last over with the score at 138. Thornton had to satisfy themselves with 6 points.

Thornton Dale 3rd X1 v Muston 2nd X1- Saturday 4th July 09

Thornton won the toss and decided to bowl

While the opening pair of Sam Davies and Paul Allardice were bowling wickets tumbled constantly

Sam Davies bowled 6 overs 4 maidens 5 runs for 4 wickets and Paul Allardice bowled 6 overs 1 maiden 12 runs for 4 wickets

Once the opening pair had bowled their spell muston were on 14-8

Muston then steadied things a bit but could only master anoher 12 runs before Ash Hodgson got his first wicket

However Thornton found it difficult to take the last wicket and it was only a good run out by Mark Williams that could finish Muston off for just 52 runs

Thornton lost 2 early wickets in reply but Sam Stephenson batted well to make 22 not out while Eddy Fambeley held things together at the other end to bat through for 7 runs

Thornton Dale 2nd X1s v Wombleton 18 July 2009

Led by Dave Cowton the seconds won by 82 runs and achieved a maximum 20 points for the second time this season in a game played at Harome.

Heavy rain both before and after the game enabled Andrew Rudd to walk on water whilst scoring 90 runs in fewer than 20 overs. No one else reached 25 but a number of modest contributions and a few extras saw the team reach a total of 202 for 9 wickets.

Colin Lockwood and Danny Hill opened the bowling on a pitch which had dried considerably. Each took two wickets and the early batsmen were prevented from taking full advantage of the short straight boundaries. Later on Tom Croot took a further two wickets and the remainder were shared between Matthew Todd, Robin Boddy and Sam Asquith. For once Paul Waring did not go on to bowl but he did manage a smart run out with a direct hit towards the end of the game.

Wombleton were all out for 120 in 30 overs and the gap between them and third placed Thornton was reduced to 10 points, a very satisfying result.

Thornton Dale 3rd X1s v Sewerby 3rd X1 18 July 2009

Thornton won the toss and were bowling against the only undefeated team in the league

However it got off to a good start with Sam Davies bowling the sewerby captain round his legs

Sam Davies then got the other opener out with M.Clark taking a good catch over his shoulder and Sewerby were looking shakey on just 13-2

Thornton were fielding very well and keeping up the pressure but the sewerby batsman got used to a not very good wicket and batted well

Mark Williams bowled well in the middle overs to go for just 15 from his 5 overs

However Thornton let it slip in the last 10 overs and didnt field as well as they had been during the rest of the game and gave away unnecessary runs and had to chase 170

Batting got off to a solid but slow start but the once the first wicket fell one came after another

Only Jack Riley offered some resistance with 16 not out but he got no support from any of the other batsman and Thornton finished on a poor 54 all out

Thornton Dale 2nd X1 v Sherburn 2nds - Sunday 26 July

Thornton batted first and Sam Asquith & Matthew Clark scored 29 off the first eight overs.  Three wickets then fell in the tenth over and shortly afterwards the score was 49 for 5. Andrew Rudd continued where he had left off the previous week and scored 61 in a partnership of 66 with Dave Cowton. Nine wickets had fallen for 145 when rain intervened and an early tea was taken.

On resuming Iain Farrow (35) and Robin Boddy (18 not out) joined in the excellent last wicket partnership of 54 before the innings closed at 199.

Unfortunately this total was not enough.  The game continued without further interruptions, but light rain and a wet outfield meant the Thornton bowlers had to struggle with a wet ball.  Only Robin Boddy (3 for 48) managed to impose some control and powerful hitting by the Sherburn batsmen saw them knock off the runs in the 33rd over.  Thornton had to satisfy themselves with 5 points whilst remaining in 3rd place.

Thornton Dale 3rd X1s v Brompton 2nd X1 25 July 2009

Brompton won the toss and decided to bowl first

Thornton Dale 2nd X1 v Fylindales 2nd X1 Away Saturday 8th August

On a day when at least 20 players were unavailable throughout the Club Thornton did well to dismiss eight Fylingdales batsmen for a combined total of 43 runs; unfortunately the other batsmen scored 124 and a team total of 181 for 9 proved too many for the visitors who finished with 123 for 8 and lost by 58 runs.

Thornton's batting got off to a poor start and found themselves 20-3 when Matthew Clark came in to join Lee Miers at the crease

The pair batted well and sensibly but Matthew Clark got out to a very good delivery for 17 and thornton went from 50-3 to 61-7

Wykeham then steadied things abit and started to get back on track again but the introduction of Harry Stenton Changed the game

He got their 2 main batsman out caught, bowled another and some quick work behind the stumps by Matthew Clark gave him another with a stumping, he finished with 4-17

Sam Stephenson also came on to bowl and bowled very well in his last game of the season and took 2-17 from 5 overs

Matthew Clark made 48 not out and Sam Davies made 47 not out including a 6 to win the game and thornton finished 122-0, the highest opening partnership ever for the 3rds :)

Thornton Dale 2nd X1 v Scalby 3rd X1 Away Saturday 22nd August

Thornton were put into bat on a wicket which gave considerable help to the bowlers.  The early batsmen struggled but the middle order - Colin Pickering (28) Paul Waring (47) and Dave Cowton (26 not out) - then took charge and the eventual total was 146 for 6.

Scalby made an aggresive start  but fell away in the later stages and were all out for 111. The captain chose the right time to come on to bowl and took 4 for 5 in 3 overs.

Seventeen points took the team back to third place.

Thornton Dale 2nd X1 V Oriel Home Saturday 29th August

The Second X1 began their final match of the season knowing that victory would secure second place in Division "B" and promotion for 2010.

Sadly the Batsmen failed to respond to the challenge and, batting first, the score had reached only 48 for 8 before Dave Cowton (17) and Tom Croot (30) showed some resistance.

A final total of 94 gave the bowlers a difficult task.

In the event Colin Pickering (2 for 20) and Robin Boddy (3 for 24) bothbowled very steadily and six wickets fell before Oriel manged to win.

A disappointing 3 points and all to play for next season.
